São Paulo, November 07, 2022 – CBA (Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio) will conduct its next emergency drill in the Piraju Dam area next Wednesday, November 9, at 10:30 a.m.  Emergency drills, a requirement under Brazilian dam safety regulations, are carried out in coordination with the Municipal Civil Defense Authority and law enforcement agencies. They are designed to develop a dam safety culture in local communities within the Self-Rescue Zone, and to ensure emergency equipment is in good working order. When the siren sounds, residents in the area will follow escape route signs to the nearest muster point, according to instructions received during previous training. Although participation in the drills is voluntary, CBA has worked to raise awareness of their importance among local residents. The company prepared ahead of the drill throughout October, ensuring the siren system equipment was functioning properly and escape route and muster point signage was properly in place, as well as providing training to the local community, increasing engagement. “Drills are organized annually as a preventive and educational exercise with the involvement of the local community. To build a dam safety culture it is essential that everyone is familiar with the meaning of each siren, the escape routes and the muster points,” says Helena Nunes, dam safety manager at CBA. It is important to note, however, that the Piraju Dam is safe. CBA has a robust dam safety management system that is consistent with best practices and includes quarterly, monthly and six-monthly inspections as well as independent audits by specialized firms. The dam is also periodically inspected by the appropriate government agencies and has valid dam safety certificates as required by law. Emergency drills are carried out at all dams managed by CBA under an Emergency Preparedness Plan. Besides the Piraju Dam, drills were organized last Tuesday (the 8th) near the Ourinhos (SP) and Jacarezinho (PR) dams.
